The new PIP-II Campus, now under construction, will soon be home to the world’s most powerful linear particle accelerator. This accelerator is part of the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE), an international research collaboration that will study the mysteries of neutrinos. Once operational, PIP-II will generate an intense neutrino burst, sent to detectors 800 miles away, enabling groundbreaking discoveries in particle physics.
The Laboratory on the Prairie
Fermilab, originally established as the National Accelerator Laboratory, began operations in Illinois on June 15, 1967. Located on 6,800 acres, the lab’s first machine, a four-mile-circumference particle accelerator known as the “Main Ring”, laid the foundation for the later development of the Tevatron, once the most powerful particle collider
in the world.

Main Ring, now decommissioned - the ring is part of a vast infrastructure the PIP-II campus will tap into.
Accelerator Ring, once used for the Tevatron - the PIP-II Beam Line will tie into this existing accelerator ring.
Path to South Dakota, once a proton is accelerated to near-light speed, it’s collision generates a burst of neutrinos toward detectors over 800 miles away.
